Happy New Year வாழ்த்து பாடல் in Tamil film

The song from Sakalakalavallavan that I heard yesterday still does some ரீங்காரம் in my ears..

Not only the greetings message of religious heads and our political leaders we see as routines on New Year Day, but also the telecast/broadcast of this song from Sakalakalavallavan have also become a regular feature on New Year Day in most of the Tamil Channels/FMs. Ilamai ithO ithO Inimai ithO ithO… is simply a rocking song that rocks today's youth too. And I wont be surprised to see a remix of that song in any of the upcoming tamil movie, given the success these remixes generates in Tamil film song lovers nowadays, to name a few –

'வெத்தலையப் போட்டேன்டீ...' (Billa; Stg: Ajith)
பொன்மகள் வந்தாள்' (Azhagiya Thamizh magan; Stg-Vijay)
'என்னாச மைதிலியே என்னை நீ காதலியே' (Manmadhan; Stg-Simbu)
'ஏ ஆத்தா ஆத்தோரமா வாரியா...' (Malaikkottai; Stg-Vishal)
'என்னடி முனியம்மா' (Vaathiyar; Stg-Arjun)

Though the song is totally based on the strength of Kamal's image, the success of இளமை இதோ இதோ... should be attributed to Ilayaraja, SPB and AVM too. Almost around the same time another new year song that was also quite popular for some years was that TMS sung 'நல்லோர்கள் வாழ்வைக் காக்க நமக்காக நம்மைக் காக்க ஹேப்பி ந்யூ இயர்' from the film SANGILI (a Sivaji starrer, but more notably the debut film for Prabhu). சிவாஜி கோட்-சூட்டில் தொந்தியும் தொப்பையுமாக ஆடும் பாடல்.. M.N.நம்பியர் தான் வில்லன். 'NO17' தலைகீழே பார்த்தால் LION என்று தெரியுமே... நியாபகம் வருதா...? I remember DD's Oliyum OLiyum that used to telecast host of other New Year songs such as the one from the K.Balachander's film Nootrukku Nooru, 'உன்னை வாழ்த்திப்பாடுகிறேன், நீ வரவேண்டும்...' - அது ஜிகினா உடையில் ராஜஸ்ரீ என்று நினைக்கிறேன்; then we also had 'தங்கமகள்... துள்ளி வந்தாள்......புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துக்கள்ள்ள், எல்லோரும் பாடுங்கள்' (அதுக்குமேல lyrics சுத்தமா நியாபத்திற்கு வரலை) from one Sivaji-Prabu-Ambika starrer (படம்? Theerpu or Thiruppam?) I am also reminded about another new year song from the film Paalaivanacholai... I think that was 'பௌர்ணமி நேரம் பாவை ஒருத்தி...'.

நல்ல நியாபகத்துக்கு வரும் நியூ இயர் பாடல் என்றால் அது மணிரத்தினம் இயக்கிய 'அஞ்சலி' படத்தில் நிஷாந்தி ஆடிய க்ரூப் டான்ஸில் வரும் கோரஸ் பாடல் 'இரவு நிலவு உலகை அழைக்க நினைத்தது...'. Apart from this, is there any New Year song from other Tamil films that comes to your mind...please let me know. The above songs came under different circumstances in these films, yet they conveyed some message/greetings for new year.


After a very long gap of years, or even for the first time I would say… இளமை இதோ இதோ song made me to think about the relevance of that song to the eve of New Year. However, a close look at the lyrics of Sakalakalavallavan song will reveal that the song has nothing to offer as New Year message, but it is all about Kamal's histrionics only. The film Sakalakalavallavan is no doubt a landmark in the career of Kamal; it came at a time when Kamal was trying to switchover from his 'Kadhal Illavarasan' mode to assume a higher and a more sophisticated 'Sakalakalavallavan' form. The film was undoubtedly a huge commercial success (even eclipsing the much better எங்கேயோ கேட்ட குரல் of Rajni). The film belonged to the time when I happened to witness regular battles fought in my class room between Kamal and Rajni fans – a battle that went for almost a decade. This film released under AVM banner cornered widespread acceptability throughout the state in all three centers, thereby expanding the mass base of Kamal to B and C centers as well (until then, I think Kamal was considered a hero with base in A center only). Though the story or screenplay of Sakalakalavallavan offered nothing new to Tamil cinema, the success of the film made the producers/directors to adopt the same formula for many years. Critics on the other hand point out that this is the movie which played a spoilsport in the genuine movie makers' attempt to present Tamil cinema in an artistic form.

Well, coming to this song, let us see what Kamal demonstrates in this socalled newyear song –
கம்பெடுத்து ஆடுவேன்
கத்திச் சண்டை போடுவேன்
குத்துவதில் சூரன் நான்
குஸ்திகளில் வீரன்நான்


The fiery combatant in Kamal comes out in the above lines, thanks to the lyrics of Vaali. His skills in Gusthi (boxing?) and Silambattam (traditional martial art) and Fencing (அதாங்க... நம்ப எம்ஜியாரும் நம்பியாரும் போடுவாங்களே... கத்திச்சண்டை!) all finds a place. Then he goes on telling about his dancing skill... Kamal also speaks about his popularity among females (காலேஜ் டீனேஜ் பெண்கள் எல்லோர்க்கும் என்மீது கண்கள்) and also swollen with pride that he was successful in Hindi movies too (ஏக் துஜே கேலியே, ஏண்டி நீ பார்த்தியே???) and also does some acrobats (குட்டிக்கரணம், then lifts two ladies in each of his hands)... and Kamal entertains ridding a motor bike, then smashes a glass window, does some Roller skating… all he had reportedly done by himself without the support of any dupe artiste – oh, a real sakalakalavallavan indeed! Kamal also doesn’t not fail to throw some light on his film career; he hints about his versatility in taking up different kind of roles (eg: Kalyanaraman) and reminds the audience that he is in the scene since a long time (from the days of his childhood in Kalathoor Kannamma).

The following lyrics needs no explanation..

நிகர் ஏது கூறுங்கள் (here is where I have to admit that Kamal was matchless in his heydays; at that time, there was no Prabu Deva, Raju sundaram, Lawrence… even though Anand Babu made his debut couple of years later, Babu was still unable to match Kamal in style and grace)
நான் பாடும் பாட்டைக் கேளுங்கள்
கைத்தாளம் போடுங்கள்
ஊர் போற்றவே பேர் வாங்குவேன்
நான் தான் சகலகலா வல்லவன்''
next stanza goes like this -
இந்தியிலும் பாடுவேன்
வெற்றி நடை போடுவேன்
ஏக்துஜே கேலியே.. லலா லலா
ஏண்டி நீ பார்த்தியே லலா லலா

எனக்காக ஏக்கம் என்னம்மா
களத்தூரின் கண்ணம்மா
உனக்காக வாழும் மாமந்தான்
கல்யாணராமன் தான்
நாள்தோறும் தான் ஆள் மாறுவேன்
நான் தான் சகலகலா வல்லவன்''

However, as far as the lyrics of the next stanza are concerned, I would rather dismiss it as something more clichéd exaggeration which no hero of Kollywood, Tollywood or Bollywood is found inculpable in my judgment.


''என்னை யாரும் ஏய்த்தால் ஆகாது
அதுதானே கூடாது
என்னை வெல்ல யாரும் கிடையாது
எதிர்க்கின்ற ஆளேது
யார் காதிலும் பூச்சுற்றுவேன்
நாந்தான் சகலகலா வல்லவன்''


என்ற பாடல் வரிகள் வரும்போது, ஏ.வி.எம்.புஷ்பலதா (படத்தில் அம்பிகாவின் அம்மா) போல வாயைப் பிளந்துகொண்டு ஒருவித பிரம்மிப்போடு டிவி முன்பாக உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டு என் பால்ய காலங்களில் பார்த்தவந்தான் நானும்.


and back again to the Pallavi…

And so, the song is all about Kamal Hassan and nothing about New Year baring that first line – 'hi everybody wish you happy newyear', which infact, is not a part of the song at all, but only the prelude of the song – 'so what?' you may ask me. Whenever this song is projected as a New Year song, no doubt it will be a virtual treat for all his fans; but for the rest of us..? Anyhow, if this song takes you to your joyful youthful days, that is the best thing that this song has done, and if it really does take you to your golden olden days of your adolescent years, then that is the best thing that I have done by writing this piece.
